WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Monday that the Justice Department and Congress are “looking at” Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat who has long been in Trump’s crosshairs.
Trump made the comment in his morning announcement on Truth Social that he’s dispatching White House border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota on Monday night. The president said his administration is investigating massive fraud in the state, which he said “is at least partially responsible for the violent organized protests going on in the streets.”
“Additionally, the DOJ and Congress are looking at “Congresswoman” Ilhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars,” Trump said in his post.
Trump did not provide further details on the alleged investigations. Asked for comment on Trump’s post, the congresswoman’s office pointed NBC News to a statement she posted to social media.
“Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking. Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me. Years of “investigations” have found nothing. Get your goons out of Minnesota,” she wrote on X.
The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment. NBC also reached out to the offices of House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.
Trump has attacked Omar, the first Somali-American elected to Congress, and the larger Somali-American community for weeks. As his administration faces growing outrage over its handling of immigration enforcement in the Minneapolis area, he and his allies have drawn renewed attention to fraud allegations involving Somali-run day care centers.
Trump reacted to the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis man on Saturday in part by pointing to Omar.
“Why does Ilhan Omar have $34 Million Dollars in her account?,” he said on Truth Social. “And where are the Tens of Billions of Dollars that have been stolen from the once Great State of Minnesota?” Trump said that U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement are in the state to investigate “massive Monetary Fraud, with Billions of Dollars missing, and Illegal Criminals that were allowed to infiltrate the State through the Democrats’ Open Border Policy. We want the money back, and we want it back, NOW.”
Omar has disputed the claims from conservatives, amplified by Trump, about her net worth.
In a video posted on social media last September, she said, “Last year, some GOP crazies said I was worth $83 million, now they’re saying I’m worth over $30 million. The value range listed for the assets reflects the *full* cost assessment of the businesses, in which my husband is one of several partners, and does not reflect his individual share. Ps. Keep wishing millions into existence so I could pay off these student loans.”
Omar referenced her 2024 financial disclosure report, which all members of the House are required to file, which showed a Rose Lake Capital LLC listed as having a value of between $5 million to $25 million. That was listed as “partnership income” and said “none” for income for Omar. It also listed ESTCRU LLC, which had a value between $1 million to $5 million. The actual income listed for Omar was between $5,000 and $15,000.
The Trump administration has been facing overwhelming criticism for how it has handled Minnesota, including the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and, a few weeks ago, Renee Nicole Good.
Omar is the latest Minnesota Democrat to face Justice Department scrutiny. NBC News reported last week that the DOJ subpoenaed Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Jacob Frey and other state leaders as part of an investigation into whether Minnesota officials conspired to block federal immigration operations. Walz and Frey denied wrongdoing. Walz wrote in a statement on X that the probe is “political theater” and a “partisan distraction.” Frey accused the administration of “weaponiz[ing] its power to try to intimidate local leaders for doing their jobs.”
The Minnesota investigations follow a slew of probes in other frequent Trump targets, most of them Democrats.
