Child Abuse Allegations Before Ruby Franke

“And no one believed me. Because why would they?” Jessi said. “She destroyed my credibility. I was an angry teenager.”

Ruby and Jodi—who were business partners for a life coaching service called ConneXions—were arrested in August 2023 after Ruby’s son escaped from Jodi’s home and ran to a neighbor’s house to call for help. At the time, he was malnourished with duct tape on his wrists and ankles, according to police, who later found his sister malnourished in Jodi’s house.

Jessi said the arrest wasn’t surprising.

“We knew that Jodi does this. We knew 14, almost 15 years ago, that she’s already done this to me, and people saw and people witnessed and did nothing,” Jessi told ABC News in 2023. “Just because you reframe it as ‘tough love,’ or ‘tough parenting,’ that’s not love. That is abuse.”

At the sentencing hearing in February 2024, Ruby—who started vlogging in 2015 with her then-husband Kevin Franke and six kids on the 8 Passengers YouTube channel—explained her actions by saying that she had been “led to believe this world was an evil place.”

“For the past four years, I’ve chosen to follow counsel and guidance that has led me to a dark delusion,” Ruby said in court, per footage shown in the documentary. “My distorted version of reality went largely unchecked, as I would isolate from anyone who challenged me.”

Ruby and Jodi are serving four to 30 years in prison, with their time behind bars being determined by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole.
