Industry’s Marisa Abela on Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis at Age 23

Marisa Abela is investing in her health.

Nearly six years after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 23, the Industry star offered an update on her medical journey.

And thankfully, after undergoing an eight-hour surgery to remove a tumor on her neck in 2020, the now-29-year-old’s future is looking bright, as she told The Sunday Times in an interview published Jan. 3, “I’m all in the clear now, thank God.”

Nonetheless, Marisa—who also underwent radioactive iodine treatment following her diagnosis—noted that she will require medication for the rest of her life as a result of her ailment, along with regular doctor’s visits.

“I don’t have a working thyroid so these pills sort of create one,” she continued. “I’m never going to miss those appointments.”

The BAFTA-winning actress also encouraged other women to prioritize their wellbeing in order to benefit all areas of their lives.

“The thyroid is all to do with your hormones,” she explained, “and staying on top of your hormones, as a woman, to make sure things are running as they should, is important.”
